Cloth diaper newbies often order their diapers, and then wonder what the best way is to use them?  With prefold diapers, there are lots of ways to use them, fold them, cover them, pin them and “snappy” them.  Here’s the run down.

Starting Out With Prefolds

If you’re just getting started with prefold cloth diapers, I recommend  using them with diaper covers.  I found this to be the easiest way, because you don’t have to learn complicated folds, and you don’t have to pin the diapers.

You simply fold the prefold along the creases.  A prefold is a trifolded piece of cloth.  So, it has 3 panels, and 2 creases in between the panels.  One folded in thirds, just lay it in your diaper cover, and secure the cover however it is meant to be secured (snaps or Velcro).

Covers

If you are using the prefold/cover method, you have a lot of options.  I really liked the wool covers we had–Imse Vimse and Little Beetles.  They are a little pricey, but super durable.  And the Little Beetles wool cover we got is a “one size,” meaning it should go from newborn to potty trained.

Other cover options are basically different kinds of waterproof covers–nylon, PUL, etc.  These can be great, especially for nighttime or for heavy wetters.  While wool is naturally absorbent, antibacterial and odor eliminating, they are not waterproof.  They are moisture resistant.

Folding

You can also fold and fasten your diaper, and either use a cover, or not.  Folds include what’s called the Newspaper Fold, the Angel Wing Fold, the Bikini Twist, and the Sidewall/Jellyroll Fold.

For fastening the diaper, you can use the classic diaper pin method.  This is tried and true.  However, there is something called a Snappie, which is a Y-shaped doodad which easily fastens your baby’s prefold on.

Gerber BirdsEye Prefolds

We bought the Gerber Birdseye prefolds, but really found them to be too thin for our diapering needs.  However, they made excellent burp clothes and wipes, which we still use to this day.

1. How many prefolds should I have for my baby.

I would start with about 2 dozen.  If you are using covers, have about 6-8 covers handy, and expect to do laundry every 2 days–3 days at most.

2. What do the numbers mean, like 4x8x4?

Those numbers indicate layers of thickness for each panel.  The middle number is the middle panel.  So, in the example above, the left panel would have a thickness of 4; the middle panel would have a thickness of 8; and the right panel would have a thickness of 4.

3. How many diapers should I bring in my diaper bag.

That really depends on how long you will be out. It may also depend on the make of your bag. I always suggest having2.  Kalencom diaper bags, at least the one we have, tend to be really roomy, and easy to use.  With this bag, I can bring as many diapers as I want, because I can fit so many.  But, again, bare minimum is 2.
