How Does Weight Loss Tea Work?

by Martin on “Sat 6, February 2010”

When you are drinking green tea, weight loss is not going to be instant or drastic unless you are making serious efforts in addition to the tea. Green tea contains a chemical known as epigallocatechin gallate, also known as EGCG. EGCG is a type of antioxidant that is known as a polyphenol, and exists in much greater quantities in green tea than in black tea, due to the amount to which black tea has been oxidized.

EGCG works in our bodies to stimulate weight loss by means of increasing the level of thermogenesis in the body. When you drink a cup of weight loss tea, your body generates slightly more body heat, thus burning additional fat than you would otherwise.

The amount of calorie burn due to the thermogenic effects of green tea is not going to be huge. Studies indicate that you can expect to burn about 80 additional calories per day due to these effects when you drink two to three cups of tea per day.

Now, the secret to using tea for weight loss is not to think in the short term. Even if your activity level and dietary habits remain exactly as they are, the addition of tea to your diet burns an additional 80 calories per day, which, over the course of one year, adds up to 29,200 calories. Since one pound of fat contains 3,500 calories, that comes out to a little over 8 pounds over the course of one year solely because you began drinking green tea.

Of course, if you are serious about losing weight, you are going to do much more than simply drinking tea. Using green tea in addition to watching your diet and exercising regularly is the best way that you are going to be able to lose weight as quickly as possible.
