Starting a Career as a Pastry Chef

Starting a pastry chef career begins with first graduating from high school.  Then to move on to a career in which you can prepare piping hot breads and sweet flaky pastries you need to be willing to devote the time and patience required to achieve this well respected goal.  Pastry chefs often have to work from the wee hours of the morning around 3 or 4 AM in order to get their desserts, breads, pastries and donuts ready for when the doors are opened and customers start lining up for their finished product.  During the quiet of most nights the pastry chef or baker is taking piles of ingredients and working their magic with those different piles of ingredients to make a delicate flaky pastry, piping hot loaf of bread, or a fresh hot apple or cherry pie.

A pastry chef knows that their late night work hours are very much appreciated when they see the smiles and feeling go satisfaction when they bite into that freshly baked pastry or slice of warm bread.  A pastry chef’s job can be very rewarding whether their daily work consists of preparing baked goods for the shelves of stores, elegant desserts for high end restaurants, or for baked goods for neighborhood bakery.  What is important to them is to provide the sweets that will help the customer get the sweet fix they need for their sweet tooth.
When you become a pastry chef you will often find the following duties in their job description:

  • Oversee and schedule kitchen staff
  • Order supplies for the kitchen
  • Prepare baked goods for the business
  • Prepare, bake and decorate a variety of pastries and desserts
  • Keep the kitchen organized and under control

A good pastry chef will be able to handle these tasks and still be able to be creative, pay attention of details and provide good customer service.
