Curtains and Blinds – Aesthetics and Functionality

In the world of window treatments, there are two predominant styles that are most popular amongst homeowners; curtains and blinds. Each one has unique characteristics, and while I would be hesitant to say that one is better than the other, it helps to know the unique properties of each, in order to make a more informed decision about what will work best in your situation. So in this article I would like to offer up a brief overview of each.

Curtains have been used for hundreds of years, and the basic design has not changed during all that time. The old adage “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” applies here, as curtains work perfectly just as they are. Most people choose curtains for their aesthetic value. There is nothing more stunning than a free flowing curtain hanging off an ornate rod in your living room, offering a textured subtlety that can’t be matched by blinds.

Because curtains are first and foremost used to liven up your décor, functionality will tend to take a second seat. Curtains are limited in what they can do, the majority of them will not provide you with a complete blackout solution (unless they have been specially lined) and do not do a fantastic job of insulating. If you are in an area that suffers from extreme hot or cold, then curtains may not be the best choice. However, if looks are important, and you are ina situation where you are able to use them, you can do a lot to enhance their appearance with trimmings, tiebacks and valances, creating a unique atmosphere in your room.

Blinds, on the other hand are all about functionality. There is a larger number of varying styles for blinds than there are for curtains, and each one has its own purpose. For example, honeycomb blinds are specifically designed for insulation, with their unique cellular structure; they trap the cold air in their pockets, keeping your house warm during winter and cool during summer. Likewise, venetian blinds are particularly useful for larger windows and doors, and unlike curtains, they will fold back to nothing when not in use, providing you with an uninterrupted view.

The choice then, is one of looks or function. Looks are a personal preference, and everyone has different tastes. Function, however, is fairly straight forward and is driven by needs such as insulation, privacy and light control. Regardless of which type of blinds shades curtains or shutters you decide are right for you, you are sure to find what you are looking for with a little research and persistence.
