New Cordless Phone for the Family

We have been looking at replacing our existing home phone system for some time. The current phone is a cordless wall phone model from AT&T that I purchased from Costco about 8 years ago. It has held up pretty well considering the abuse it has taken in a family of five, two of which are teenage girls that can talk on the phone for hours.

I have been a little hesitant to purchase a new phone for the house because there are so many different cordless phones on the market and I want to take the time to see which phone is really the best value for our home. Add to this the fact that there seems to be a new technology in cordless phones coming out every year. First it was the 900Mhz, then came the 5.8 Ghz, now the latest thing is the DECT phones.  So, being a busy guy, I have waited to the point where the existing phone is all but shot and will not hold a battery charge for more than about five minutes.

So I did some research and decided on the Uniden DECT cordless phone with 2 lines. The phone is expandable so that we can add base stations and more phones in the future if we need them. The girls say that we need them now (as in one in each of their rooms), but I am not going to let them do that yet. For now we will get by with the main base station phone that has the answering machine in it and another base station and phone in the living room.

The fact that this is a dual line cordless phone will allow the girls to be on the phone with their friends and still let the rest of us get or make a call.

My impression so far is that this is a great phone. The sound clarity is excellent especially when compared to our older system. The reception is excellent and I can take the handset anywhere around the inside or outside of our home without any static. And the phone just looks really great. This was one of the main sticking points for me with many of the current cordless phones – they just look ugly. The Uniden is slick and modern looking but very functional as well. Overall, after 2 weeks with this new cordless phone in the house, we are quite happy and would recommend it to anyone.
