What is The Best Detoxification Plan For Alcoholics

More and more people are looking into alcohol detox programs these days than ever before.  A good detox program will first of all eliminate alcohol from your body, and then begin work on repairing any body parts, such as your liver or your kidneys, that have been affected by excessive alcohol consumption.  There are many different types of programs, with some being aimed primarily at heavy drinkers or social drinkers, while others are designed to actually help the alcoholic recover.

Most people who voluntarily agree to enter a detox program do so hoping that it will change them in a significant way.  Because of that, it is important to find a program that will really work, one that you feel comfortable with and thus you will stick with.

How to Find The Right Alcohol Detoxification Program

The first thing to do is to learn all you can about detoxification. Depending on how dependent you have become on alcohol, it could be very stressful for your body to undergo detox.  If you are more than a social drinker, and you have a problem with alcohol, you should only undergo detoxification under medical supervision. Complications can occur during the detox process, and it is important that you have access to medical treatment and care during this time.

Detoxification is Not the Same As Recovery

Detoxification comes first, then recovery follows. You cannot recover properly until you have successfully detoxified your system.  Recover, for an alcoholic, is an ongoing, lifelong commitment. Detoxification helps curb your cravings for alcohol. Once that is out of the way, then you can start to address the other problems that involve alcohol abuse, such as the underlying reasons why you developed problems in the first place.

When initially going through the detox stage, you may need medical help in the form of sedatives or other medicine that will help see you through the worst of it.

Make Sure Your Detox Program is Sufficiently Staffed

If you are an alcoholic, you may undergo a very difficult detox period, and it is essential that the staff at the center are able to handle whatever symptoms you have.  If you are not sure, ask around. Try to find out what their success rate is.  If you do not feel comfortable with the center, then it may not be the right place for you. It is important that you feel comfortable with the staff, and that you trust their abilities to help you.
