Helpful Information on Factors Affecting Auto Insurance

Most of us are aware that there are many factors that can affect the cost of our auto insurance policy. That’s why no two people’s auto insurance costs the same. These factors are hard to pinpoint and even harder to put a dollar amount to. But, the insurance companies have certain guidelines that they use to calculate the value of the factors to come up with your premium amount. Some of these factors are set in stone, and some of them are flexible depending on other things, and others are truly flexible.

The ones that can’t be changed are: 1) your age; 2) your gender – women have proven to be safer drivers; and 3) marital status – you can change this but not usually just to get lower insurance rates. The factors that can affect your auto insurance rates are: 1) your geography – living in the country versus the city can make a huge difference in your rates; 2) driving violations – speeding tickets, running red lights, etc., all count against you; 3) your vehicle – if you drive a hot, flashy car your rates will be high for sure; 4) accident claims – your future driving record can help your insurance rates; 5) credit rating – a bad credit rating makes you look irresponsible; 6) your occupation – this is a hard one to accept, but the insurers say it does matter.

Some of the other things that may affect your auto insurance but can vary: 1) miles driven per year – you could adjust this by taking public transportation or joining a carpool; 2) distance to work – you could change jobs or move; 3) years of driving experience – this will change with time; 4) business use of the vehicle – you could stop using your car for business reasons; 5) whether or not you currently have auto insurance discounters – this could go against you if you had a car at the same time; 6) theft protection devices – if you have any put on your auto you may receive a discount; and 7) multiple cars – if you insure more than one auto you will get the multi-car discount.

All of the above can be really overwhelming when you’re trying to choose which options you can afford and which ones you really need for your car. As usual, the best way to start off on your quest is to get on the internet and do some comparison shopping. The internet will gather all the information for you, but it in order, and present it to you in an easy, understandable way so that you can make the right decision.

Car Insurance Rates Are Dropping

Surveys among car owners show that almost half of them feel they are being overcharged for car insurance. That is what is driving the car owners to shop around much more for keystone auto insurance than in the past. The auto owners stated that without notice their current insurance company had raised their premium when their renewal time came around. Shopping around for auto insurance has proven to pay off for many car owners who took the time and diligently searched until they found insurance for their auto that was a reasonable rate. It has been reported that some of these shoppers saved as much as $100 on their new policies.

Another survey found that one-third of drivers have decreased their driving to save money on gasoline and also to make themselves eligible for the low mileage discount that most auto insurance companies are now offering. If a driver reduces their mileage by a certain number of miles they can qualify for this discount which will lower their insurance premium up to 15 percent. This means that more people are carpooling today than six months ago or taking the many types of public transportation available now. Some people are even riding their bikes to work whenever possible or walking if it is reasonable.

There are some car owners that are decreasing their coverage which is not the best solution to the problem because it is not a good idea to be underinsured. You should always have enough insurance to fully protect yourself. In fact, in order to protect yourself you also need to purchase uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage because there are a lot of people in those categories on the road. You can increase your deductibles but remember that if you get into an accident and your vehicle is damaged you will have to come up with the extra money in order to get it repaired.

Something that never usually crosses the mind of someone that just had an accident and that is to pay the claim themselves. This will keep your insurance rates from going up and also will keep your record clean. You might want to consider doing this if the claim is within your budget. A main factor in the cost of your insurance premium is the type of auto you drive. A fast, flashy sports car will cost more to insure that a family-type vehicle for obvious reasons, such as the speed factor. Another sure way for your insurance premium to increase is adding a teenager to your policy.
