Why to buy a masticating juicer

There are many different fruit and vegetable juicer machines on the market, and it pays to know what you’re really looking for before you buy one. Although you can pick up a really good juicer for a low price from a local department store, there may be some good reasons to spend a bit more, and buy a slightly more versatile machine. Many people have never even heard of a masticating juicer let alone understand what they do.

Masticating is the scientific term for chewing. This describes to some degree how these juicers extract juice – instead of using a spinning blade to shred the ingredients into the pulp (and then spin out the juice) these juicers operate by slowly turning rollers or gears to physically crush the liquid out of the fruit or vegetable you are juicing.

This has a number of benefits:

Firstly, more of the original goodness of the food is preserved this way. High-speed processing of many machines generates heat and causes oxidation when air is mixed into the juice. Heat and contact with oxygen damage vitamin and living enzyme compounds, so the faster cheaper machines mean you end up with lower quality juice.

The slow speed processing of a masticating juicer means no heat is generated and no air is mixed into the liquid. Aside from making better quality juice it also opens up new opportunities for producing new and interesting combinations of foods. Normal juicers generally struggle to juice things such as wheat grass or leafy green vegetables, because the fibrous nature of these things means that they get stuck on the blades. A masticating juicer however, physically pulls in and crushes everything, so wheat grass and even herbs can be easily juiced.

The advantages don’t stop with just making juice either. Many masticating juicers such as the popular Angel juicer can process things such as nuts and seeds, to make a wide range of healthy products at home. This includes making your own peanut butter, cold pressed seed oils, and even processing things like soya beans to make your own soy milk.

Masticating juicers do cost more than normal juicers, but you can probably justify this if you are going to be using it to make more foods. Although some models like the Angel juicer are very expensive, there are many affordable masticating juicers on the market such as the Greenstar range and the Oscar juicers. These can be bought for between $150 and $200 and represent excellent value for money.

buying a juicer machine

You may be looking at buying a juicer machine, because you have heard that fresh fruit and vegetable juices are very healthy. With a good juicer, they are also fun and easy to make, and a great alternative to store bought drinks. So what sort of juicer should you buy? Below are a few tips to help you choose.

1. What sort of ingredients do you want to juice the most? If you want to juice just common fruits and vegetables then you can get away with a fairly cheap model from a department store or similar. However, if you want to juice wheat grass (really packed with anti oxidants and minerals) you are best off with a hand juicer.

2. Do you want versatility, and be able to use the juicer to make purees and things like pasta dough? If so you will need to buy a masticating juicer (this is the kind that works with a slow crushing mechanism rather than a spinning blade). Many of these can do things like press oil from linseed and flax seeds too!

3. Whatever you buy, make sure it is easy to clean as well as use. There is nothing more frustrating than a juicer that is difficult to clean. A good example of an easy use juicer is the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer – the entire juicer mechanism pulls off and goes in the dishwasher, no scrubbing required.

4. Find a machine that comes with a good warranty. Juicers do break, and replacement parts are expensive. Cheap juicers don’t get more than 12 months, while better models may have up to 5 years warranty. A hand juicer (because it has no motor to break down) may have 5 or even 10 year warranty on its parts.

Of course a big part of your decision will come down to your budget. If you don’t have a lot of money then just buy what you can afford (any juice is better than none) but remember that you will get what you pay for, and a more expensive machine will last a lot longer.

Juicing for Health and Well Being

Most people turn to juicing as a way to improve their health and well being, whether they are targeting a specific illness or just want to achieve optimum health. It is now common knowledge that fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. In fact, health experts recommend 5 – 9 portions per day and juicing is a great way to help us achieve that number. With just one fresh juice we are providing our selves with several portions of fruits and vegetables or more!

Easily Digested
Many of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, especially antioxidants, are stored within the fibers. Our digestive system is not able to break down these fibers, so many nutrients pass through to our large intestine undigested. The advantage of juicing is that the fibers are broken down extensively by the juicing machine to release many of these nutrients for digestion. In addition to this, a juicer machine discards the fiber which means that the nutrients in a juice are easily absorbed into the blood stream. However, fiber is essential to our well being, so we must ensure we are eating some fruits and vegetables and whole grains to ensure we are getting our recommended daily quota.

Phytochemicals
Fruits and vegetables are a great source of naturally occurring chemicals in nature called phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are potent antioxidants that benefit our health in a number of ways. They help to remove carcinogens out of the body and to protect our DNA cells from oxidative damage that can lead to cancer. They also help protect our arteries and joints form oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to heart disease and arthritis. Although all fruits and vegetables are good source of phytochemicals, some of them are exceptionally good sources and are therefore called ‘superfoods’. Blueberries, pomegranates, kale and spinach are good examples of ‘superfoods’.

Fresh Juice vs Bottled Juice
Fresh juices contain exceptionally more nutrients than commercial juices. Commercial juices need to be heated and pasteurized to kill off bacteria to give the juice a ‘shelf life’. Such processing methods destroy all the enzymes in a juice and a large portion of the other nutrients. Effectively, a fresh juice is a completely different drink to a commercial one and that is without going into the hazards of added sugars and preservatives!
