San Juan del Sur ranks 5th on the list of top 10 Central and South American beach and sun destinations according to Trip Advisor. That’s quite a recommendation for what only a few years ago was a sleepy little fishing village.
But times are changing in San Juan del Sur. It’s well on the road to being the most sought after destination on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast for both tourists and real estate investors. Every Nicaragua property tour includes a review of San Juan del Sur real estate opportunities both in the town itself and the beaches north and south.
The town has a great position on a sweeping half moon bay directly facing the sunset. The land slopes up from the beach into a series of hills and ridges offering a wide array of viewpoint and wide-open ocean vistas. Two dramatic headlands jut out into the ocean to frame the bay and provide shelter for the boats anchored there.
The beaches north and south are stunning. White sand meets sparking ocean with plenty of surf breaks to keep the surfers enthusiastic. Majagual to the north and Coco to the south are the most well-known but every cove you pass offers a beautiful patch of sand and a dramatic ocean landscape.
The last few years have seem a host of improvements and upgrades to the town. A new walkway for pedestrians now spans the river mouth, the Main Street and square have new street lighting and many of the buildings have been re-painted. A new water main from Lake Nicaragua is almost complete and plans are in place to improve the port facilities to attract cruise visitors.
The town is in the “path of progress” as Nicaragua real estate analysts like to say. They may be right. It’s an emerging destination that’s capturing the imagination of more and more visitors and investors every year.
